There is so much muscle memory associated with this day. So many inseparable memories distinctly imprinted in my mind. 2001 • witnessing breaking news.in.real.time. Was it a hoax? And in one split second... I immediately recognized how real it was. Construction on campus, I worried the emergency landings might accidentally fall on the roofs of our buildings. Silence during World History, as we watched... world... history. An insurmountable resurgence of community arose from the dust and ashes of this tragedy. 2014-2015 • dance season at @thedanceaffair Our theme for the year was New York. I don’t know how many times Ms. Erica asked//suggested//insisted I tackle the biggest elephant in the room, and create a piece in #tribute to this tragedy. I don’t know how many times I said no, before I saw it. I saw the work complete. A picture of New York, before//during//after this tragedy. I knew I had to do this piece. //N E V E R F O R G E T// About 20 movers, the youngest of dancers was 10 years old, not even alive on this day. Together we journeyed through story after story, and learned how to hold the grief in our bodies, long enough to bring catharsis to those who needed to experience it. This one ran deep. Multi-dimensional and perfectly imperfect, I am still #humbled by this work.
